En 2010, il a été le premier lauréat du Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. Il a été nommé banjoïste de l’année lors de la cérémonie des awards d’IBMA en 2014 et en 2017. Outre sa carrière solo, il est également banjoïste du célèbre groupe progressive bluegrass Punch Brothers, cofondé avec Chris Thile, et dont le dernier album « All Ashore » vient de gagner un Grammy Award.
