Jean-François Gion s’est pris de passion pour le banjo 5 cordes en écoutant Pete Seeger, puis s’est intéressé aux artistes américains et européens pratiquant cet instrument. Il a développé sa technique dans les deux styles, bluegrass et clawhammer. Il a été membre de plusieurs formations « Folk », a participé à différents spectacles (concerts, théâtre, jeune public, animations musicales…) , et quel que soit le style, ou le public visé, il a toujours eu un banjo à portée de la main.
Il y a quelques années, il a redécouvert le banjo Clawhammer, créatif, mélodique, expressif, et a pris conscience que ce style de banjo lui serait utile pour s’exprimer à sa façon, grâce également aux nombreuses manières d’accorder l’ instrument.
Jean-François parle de ses banjos clawhammer :
– « un vieux ‘‘Clifford Essex, Concert Grand », qu’a bien voulu me céder, il y a quelques années, Steve Waring
– un magnifique banjo, avec une touche un peu plus large (à ma demande), fait par le luthier Philippe Revel »

« Depuis de très nombreuses années, je m’adresse presque exclusivement, lors de mes spectacles, au « Jeune Public ». Parfois, ils me demandent, si je devais choisir un seul instrument, quel serait mon choix. J’hésitais. Maintenant je le sais, c’est celui avec lequel je passe de longs moments…le Banjo. » (Jean-François Gion)

Si vous êtes de passage au festival de bluegrass de La Roche-sur-Foron (du 30.07 au 03.08.2014), ne manquez surtout pas le stand Nechville, le célèbre fabriquant de banjos américain. Vous pourrez essayer quelques-uns de ses superbes banjos et découvrir les innovations révolutionnaires qu’il a apportées à notre instrument favori.
Et soyez sûrs d’assister à son stage de réglage de banjo, avec un peu de chance, Tom Nechville lui-même s’occupera de votre banjo.
Le bluegrass fut à l’honneur lors du festival de guitare de Sarlat en mai 2014. Plusieurs événements se sont succédé en faveur de ce style musical.
Plusieurs artistes se sont retrouvés à l’Ancien Evêché pour animer la superbe exposition de guitares et banjos. Parmi eux, les excellents chanteurs américains Sharon Cort, de Nashville, et James Field, l’impressionnant dobroïste slovaque Henrich Novak.
Certains se sont également retrouvés au cinéma Rex de Sarlat, pour interpréter, juste avant la séance, quelques morceaux phares des films projetés, O’ Brother et Alabama Monroe.
Enfin, le concert de la salle Paul Eluard a réuni un plateau impressionnant de musiciens qui ont régalé le public avec un répertoire varié et original.
Gérard Cresson, Jean-Marie Redon et Sharon Lombardi se sont entourés d’artistes et amis d’univers totalement différents, passant de l’électrique à l’acoustique, de groupes intimistes à de grandes formations, mêlant compositions et reprises audacieuses.
Le concert s’est ouvert avec une formation électrique, avec Sébastien Cresson (guitare), Henrich Novak (dobro), Benoit Saulière (batterie) et Simon Hanks (clavier).
Section acoustique, avec une splendide composition de Gérard Cresson interprétée avec son épouse Anne Cresson à l’alto
Suivi d’une composition manouche de Jean-Marie Redon, superbement accompagnée par Hamadi Ouanas
Puis un set bluegrass, avec les chanteurs américains Sharon Cort et James Field, le dobroïste slovaque Henrich Novak et le mandoliniste Marc Delmas
Arrive alors le charismatique chanteur Gérard Mosiniak, également connu comme grand chef pour sa prestigieuse carrière de cuisinier
La soirée s’achève par un bœuf endiablé où les artistes des concerts précédents se joignent au groupe. Henry Padovani, fondateur du groupe Police et complice artistique de Gérard Mosiniak, et Solorazaf
