Parution de « A Five-String Banjo Sourcebook », de Gérard DE SMAELE

En 2015, Gérard DE SMAELE a publié un riche ouvrage en français permettant de comprendre l’histoire du banjo 5 cordes, BANJO ATTITUDES -Le banjo à cinq cordes : son histoire générale, sa documentation.
Cette année, il propose A Five-String Banjo Sourcebook, une œuvre complémentaire en anglais, qui présente avec exhaustivité les ressources de documentation ayant trait au banjo (livres, enregistrements, films, banjoïstes, luthiers, etc.) Cette compilation est incontournable pour quiconque s’intéresse vraiment à cet instrument fascinant.

Voici l’élogieuse présentation d’Art Rosenbaum:
« The American 5-string banjo is many things: a physical object of material culture with roots back to Africa and farther east, and a complex and ongoing development in North America; an equally complex musical culture ranging through vernacular, classical, and popular musical idioms and histories; and connections to social, cultural, and artistic networks. One volume cannot encompass all this, but Gérard De Smaele’s earlier work in French, « Banjo Attitudes », comes close.
