| Eurograss n'est le premier
groupe de bluegrass, mais c'est l'un des plus chaud. Dick Kimmel,
lui-même, l'un des meilleurs artistes MBOTMA's, les appelle
"incroyables pickers" et "musiciens très pointus." Bien sur, pour Monter un des Très Bons Groupe de Bluegrass, vous avez besoin de bons partenaires. Et Eurograss, tirant ceux-ci de France, d'Italie et d'Autriche, est spécialement bien-assorti. Les membres d'Eurograss sont : Pierre Bonjour, guitare et chant. Pierre s'acharne à revenir aux racines du Bluegrass ; il débuta en jouant du banjo Old Time à l'age de quatorze ans. Puis, il apprit la mandoline jusqu'à se spécialiser, maintenant, dans la guitare bluegrass. Dick Himmel, qui a joué avec lui, le considère comme l'un des meilleurs guitaristes du moment ; "Je ne pense pas qu'il y ait, au Minnesota, quelqu'un d'autre qui ait son touché." Pierre Bonjour a joué dans plusieurs groupes, tels que " "Dernier Groupe Avant L'Aurore," "Country Daze," et "Acoustic Boulevard." Il a écrit deux ouvrages de tablature de guitare. Ses goûts musicaux sont diversifiés ; ayant passé un bon moment en Irlande, à la Nouvelle Angleterre et au Québec, il continue d'étudier les formes musicales de ces contrées. Cinq ans plus tard, il se joignit à Helmut Mitteregger (mandoline), Thierry Massoubre (guitare), and Jean-Marie Redon (banjo) pour former le fameux groupe franco-autrichien "Blue Night". Fasciné par l'harmornie du chant, il est largement responsable des arrangements vocaux d'Eurograss. Massimo Gatti, mandoline et chants. Massimo est largement considéré comme l'un des meilleurs mandolistes d'Europe. Rien d'étranger au bluegrass, il a aussi joué des musiques Irlandaise, folk, new age, jazz, et même classique. En supplément à son travail avec Eurograss, il joue avec le groupe italien de bluegrass "Hot Stuff" et joue ses propres compositions avec le Massimo Gatti Quartet. Il a fait un CD en solo, "Frangenti" et apparaît dans l'enregistrement IBMA "Long Journey Home: A Collection of Bluegrass from All Over." Jean Marie Redon, banjo and chants. Jean-Marie Redon commença à jouer du banjo dans les années soixante et il est considéré comme l'un des pionniers de cet instrument en Europe. (Avec des membres venus de trois pays différents, peut-être qu'il était normal qu'il commencent dans un pays neutre). Le résultat ne se fit pas attendre. Les quatre musiciens maîtrisaient parfaitements leurs instruments ; s'ils avaient donné un award pour "Les Rois spidés du Bluegrass Européen", Eurograss auraient sûrement décroché ce prix ! Et les voix ne furent pas négligées ; le groupe se spécialise par des arrangements intéressants et inhabituels, avec Hannes Neubauer, premier de chant à la voix ténor. Quand vous les écoutez, vous avez intérêt à attacher vos ceintures et à vous accrocher ; laissez-vous aller à une chevauchée d'enfer ! YiiiiiiiHaaaaa! |
Eurograss is not the first

Of course, to Build a Better Bluegrass Band, you need good parts. And Eurograss, drawing materials from France, Italy, and Austria, is especially well-equipped. The members of Eurograss are: Pierre Bonjour, guitar and vocals. Pierre's training goes back to the roots of bluegrass; he began playing old-time banjo at the age of fourteen. He then took up the mandolin, and now specializes in bluegrass guitar. Dick Kimmel, who has played with him, considers him one of the best guitarists around; "I don't think there's a guitar player in Minnesota who can touch [him]." Pierre Bonjour has played in a variety of bands, such as "Dernier Groupe Avant L'Aurore," "Country Daze," and "Acoustic Boulevard." He has written two books of guitar tablature. His musical interests remain diverse; having spent a lot of time in Ireland, New England, and Quebec, he continues to study the musical forms of those areas. Hannes Neubauer, bass and lead vocals. After seven years there, he broke away into Austrian pop music and took to accompanying some of the top local stars. After some years with a country-rock band, he joined "Nugget" (a group which still exists) in 1984. Five years later, he joined with Helmut Mitteregger (mandolin), Thierry Massoubre (guitar), and Jean-Marie Redon (banjo) to form the well-known Franko-Austrian group "Blue Night." No stranger to bluegrass, he has also played Irish, folk, new age, jazz, and even classical music. In addition to his work with Eurograss, he plays with the Italian bluegrass band "Hot Stuff" and performs his own compositions with the Massimo Gatti Quartet. He has a solo CD, "Frangenti"; a recording with Hot Stuff called "Bitter Tears," and appears on the IBMA recording "Long Journey Home: A Collection of Bluegrass from All Over." Jean-Marie Redon, banjo and vocals. Jean-Marie Redon began playing the banjo in the Sixties and is considered one of the pioneers of the instrument in Europe. In addition to being one of the first, he is one of the best; Dick Kimmel calls him "a Bob Black." He has been a member of some of the finest French bluegrass bands, including "Bluegrass Connection," "Long Distance," and "Stylix," as well as Blue Night. He worked with Bill Keith to write Bluegrass Banjo, an instruction book, and has recorded two solo albums, "Banjoïstiquement Votre" and "Banjo 82." The seeds for Eurograss were planted in 1991, after Blue Night broke up. Two of the members of that band, Hannes Neubauer and Jean-Marie Redon, wanted to continue playing. At a jam session in 1992, they were joined by Pierre Bonjour. The members report that "Two hours and many beer cans later, it was clear that Eurograss had found its guitar player." When Massimo Gatti heard that plans were underway to form an all-star European bluegrass band, he hastened to offer his services. Thus was Eurograss formed. In theory, at least. There followed many months of phone calls, faxes, and demo tapes before the band actually met to rehearse in Geneva, Switzerland. (With members from three different countries, perhaps it's just as well they started on neutral territory.) The result was worth the wait. All four performers are masters of their instruments; if they gave an award for "Speed Kings of European Bluegrass," Eurograss would surely win the prize. And vocals are not neglected; the band specializes in unusual and interesting arrangements, with Hannes Neubauer singing lead and a clear tenor. When you hear them perform, you'll want to fasten your seatbelts and hold on; you have a smooth but racy ride ahead. |
